The city of Shimla, formerly known as Simla, is the capital of the Himachal Pradesh state in northern India. At an elevation of approximately 7,100 feet (2,200 meters), the city is located northeast of Chandigarh on a ridge of the Himalayan foothills.

The British constructed Shimla on land they had retained following the Gurkha War of 1814–16 and used it as a place for troops to rest. It acquired notoriety as a mid year resort in view of its cool environment and grand setting, and from 1865 to 1939 it filled in as India’s late spring capital. It served as Punjab state headquarters from 1947 to 1953, when Chandigarh became the state capital.

The city is a popular hill resort in India in addition to its administrative role. It is on a main road 175 miles (280 kilometers) north of Delhi and serves as a rail terminus. Shimla is also a hub for agricultural trade and has some industry, like hand-loom weaving, brewing, and light manufacturing.
